Football: AFC Wimbledon goal hero Jon Otsemobor departs MK Dons

Defender Jon Otsemobor has today left MK Dons by mutual consent.

The right-back returned to the club on Monday following a loan spell at Tranmere Rovers but his departure was confirmed this afternoon following a meeting with boss Karl Robinson.

Thirty-year-old Otsemobor faced competition from George Baldock and the newly arrived Lee Hodson this season but he will always be a part of Dons folklore after his winning goal in the 2-1 FA Cup victory over bitter rivals AFC Wimbledon last season.

The former Liverpool trainee struck in the closing stages of the second round tie at stadiummk with a cheeky back-heeled finish in the first meeting between the two clubs.

His goal earned him the nickname ‘the heel of God’.

“From the fans, to the manager, to the players; I’ve loved every minute of my time here,” said Otsemobor to the club website.

“I am disappointed to be leaving because despite having been with a few teams in my career, MK Dons is one of the only clubs I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being at.

“There are some great lads here, the training is different and enjoyable and the fans have been brilliant too.

“Of course, that goal against AFC Wimbledon will probably go down as one of the best I’ve ever scored because of the timing and the occasion. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Otsemobor made a total of 53 appearances for the club after joining on a free transfer in July 2012.

“I’d like to publicly thank Jon for his efforts and endeavours, while at the Football Club,” added manager Robinson.

“We can’t afford to carry three right-backs and we’ve got Lee and George who are younger, fresher and part of the long-term development of the club.

“The future lies with those two and Semy understands that.

“He’ll always hold a place in all of our hearts for his goal against AFC Wimbledon. We’ll all tell our kids about his goal and he will always be a part of the Club’s history.”
